Young Goodman Brown Argumentative Essay Example For Students

Youthful Goodman Brown Argumentative Essay Nathaniel Hawthorne originates from an intriguing foundation. He was conceived in Salem and later came back to live there. He was a relative of William Hathorne, a puritan judge who mistreated Quakers, and John Hathorne, a puritan officer who partook in the Salem witch preliminaries. Hawthorne’s family relationship to these two notables of puritan history makes the story â€Å"Young Goodman Brown,† all the additionally fascinating. Hawthorne implies John Hathorne when he expounds on Goodman Brown’s â€Å"fellow traveler† remarking on Brown’s granddad, who â€Å"lashed the Quaker lady so adroitly through the boulevards of Salem.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"Young Goodman Brown† is around one man’s venture through the forested areas with the villain and his experiences that make him question his confidence in himself, his significant other, and the network wherein they dwell. The topic of this story is that past any elusive underhandedness, the malevole nt that men do is eventually the all the more harming. All through the story Hawthorne utilizes setting and characters as images speaking to various parts of good and malice and he utilizes the plot to build up the possible win-over of insidiousness over â€Å"Goodman† Brown’s â€Å"Faith.†Not shockingly â€Å"Young Goodman Brown† happens in Salem during the puritan time. The story starts with Goodman Brown leaving from his significant other in the town to meet with and go for a walk in the woodland with a â€Å"fellow-traveler† the fiend. We will compose a custom paper on Young Goodman Brown Argumentative explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now The differentiation between the timberland and the town is emblematic. Outwardly, it appears to be an ordinary, strict puritan town, however when one dives in deep, one sees there is a focal point of obscurity. The profound, dim timberland in the puritan town speaks to the inner shrewdness of the residents. The backwoods is seen as strange, obscure and occupied by the fallen angel, while the town is wonderful safe and where his better half, â€Å"Faith,† is. During Goodman Brown’s stroll through the â€Å"dark forest,† he sees and discovers that huge numbers of his coaches and family members have picked the way of fiendishness. The woodland is the place all the decent individuals of the town go to vent their fiendishness while outside of the timberland, they appear as though they are unadulterated and acceptable. Hawthorne adds to the imagery by embodying the trees â€Å"which scarcely stood aside to let the tight way creep through† as Brown â€Å"walks c lose by a terrible road.†Hawthorne utilizes the characters of the story additionally to speak to great and malice. The names of the fundamental character and his better half are unexpected. Confidence, in the exacting setting of the story, is Goodman Brown’s spouse. In the indicative sense, Faith speaks to Brown’s real confidence in God and decency of mankind. She is an image of Brown’s confidence who at that point gets polluted by malicious. The pink strips in Faith’s top speak to virtue, white, spoiled by the evilness of the villain, red. He accepts that his better half, Faith is acceptable. In spite of the fact that the fallen angel shows Brown that his dad, the elder, and the remainder of the townspeople went to abhorrent, he won't go with the Devil as a result of his musings of Faith. There is a sure point in the excursion when he asks where his Faith is, now, he is emblematically looking for his own confidence in goodness, or the honorable way and is asking why he is on this way with the demon. At the end, when he sees his better half among the others in the forested areas, a member of the function, he loses confidence. He awakens and is left hopeless, alone and wary of the considerable number of locals including his significant other. The primary character’s name, Goodman Brown, is amusing on the grounds that for all his â€Å"goodness† and confidence in his convictions, he turns into the one individual in the town who represents detestable. Toward the finish of the story, the occasion changes Goodman Brown’s life and, regardless of whether it was reality or a stunt played by the fiend in Brown’s dream, the impact it had on him keeps going an amazing remainder. Earthy colored doesn’t trust anybody, He questions everybody, and sees fiendish in everybody. He becomes â€Å"stern, miserable, dimly reflective, and distrustful.† Brown would avoid singing sacred songs. Goodman Brown â€Å"would turn pale at whatever point the priest talked from the bible.† He shrank from his better half, frowned when his â€Å"family stooped down for prayer† and his â€Å"dying

Summer Camp and College Admissions

Summer Camp and College Admissions April 29 Contrary to the title and content of a CNBC article, summer camp is as unlikely a strategy as any to help you get into a highly selective college. One of the central objectives of our college admissions blog is to demystify the highly selective college admissions process and correct misconceptions. With that in mind, we came across an article up on CNBC entitled Summer camp may improve college admissions odds written by Kelli B. Grant. We dont even know what to do with that title! It is so completely and utterly false. Attending summer camp will hurt your chances for admission to highly selective colleges. It will not help them! Just think about it logically. Attending a summer camp means that mommy and daddy had a lot of money to send their kiddie to camp. Attending a summer camp means that you couldnt come up with a more creative way to spend your summer. Maybe this would have included conducting a science research project at a local university. Maybe it would have included holding a job, something college admissions officers often contrary to popular belief admire. Attending a summer camp means that you had two months off school to pursue your passions and satiate your deep intellectual curiosity but, instead, you wasted this opportunity to participate in color war and   playing ping pong. Now are there specialized camps for, say, athletes that can be beneficial? Yes, of course. Lets take, for example, swim camp. A swimmer can learn a great deal by going to a swim camp taught by Bob Bowman, the longtime coach of Michael Phelps. Maybe hell improve his breastroke stroke count or his underwater pullout. Maybe hell knock a half a second off his 200 breast. What were saying is this: A college swim coach doesnt care how you learned to swim fast. A college swim coach cares about your times. If you need swim camp to gain the interest of a college coach, then were all for that investment of your time and mommy and daddys money. But most of these camps are a complete and utter waste of your time and most will hurt your chances for admission to a highly selective college. Here is a tidbit from the piece on CNBC that is absolutely wrong and should be ignored: How you spend your summer vacation isnt just fodder for first-day-back-in-school essays. It could provide a boost on college or job applications—especially if you went to campParents shouldnt immediately race for the nearest camp sign-up sheet. While there are surely college admissions officers with fond memories of lake swims and archery, the camp experience that is more likely to stand out is a specialized one that speaks to a students interests, experts say. Summers at soccer camp can help show a would-be college athletes dedication, for example, while theater camp can be an edge for someone applying to the acting program—especially if the high schools drama program is so-so (or nonexistent). The article goes on: Colleges may also find longer camp relationships interesting, even if the camp isnt academically focused. The regular camper who becomes a counselor is a good type of continuity, [Eric] Greenberg said. That kind of camp experience can indicate positive qualities such as leadership, resilience and good social skills, he said. Yikes, bad advice! A camper becoming a counselor represents a good type of continuity for highly selective college admissions officers? Not. At. All. In the words of Americas youth, its a lame way to spend your summer. At the end of the day, colleges dont seek out campers. They seek out people who take the initiative to shape their corner of the world. They seek out talented students. They seek out the doers. Not the students who dont know how to spend their summers so they go to camp to pass the time. Those are the types of students who dont get in.

Affirmative Action And The Civil Rights Act - 973 Words

Discrimination and segregation have been inbred into America’s history from day one. Therefore, there have been many laws and bills passed to break down barriers between privileged whites and unfortunate minorities. Among these government actions are the 14th Amendment, Equal Pay Act, and the Civil Rights Acts. John F. Kennedy perhaps created one of the most heavily debated policies today, his Affirmative Action Policy. Affirmative action is defined as, â€Å"the practice of improving the educational and job opportunities of members of groups that have not been treated fairly in the past because of their race, sex, etc.† (â€Å"Definition of AFFIRMATIVE† 1). The definition itself is vague and open for a good deal of interpretation which causes much of today’s debates. The most recent interpretation of Affirmative Action came from the Fisher vs. University of Texas at Austin (UT of Austin). Fisher was a white individual who was denied acceptance into the un iversity, and then filed a lawsuit against them. Fisher lost the case at the Supreme Court level in 2013, but the case returned in 2016 again with a much closer vote, so affirmative action is losing some of its power and will continue to be challenged for years to come, but is it worth the challenge (Kut.org 1)? Racial Adverse Essay Samples

Racial Adverse Essay SamplesRacial Adverse Essay samples can be found in various medical schools across the country. This is due to the fact that many students apply to medical schools, but few qualify for acceptance. To be accepted into a medical school, a student must have a good GPA and LSAT.Racial Adverse Essay samples are used by both professors and lecturers. They are used as an introduction to the racial diversity in our country. Racial Adverse Essay samples, also known as Racial diversity guides, do not only define this word, but they give examples of various races to add variety to the curriculum.Racial Adverse Essay samples can be found in most sociology and history classes. These two sections will introduce many students to some of the racial disparities in our society. When these students are given the opportunity to use racial adversity essay samples, they will be able to apply the information to their everyday lives. This way, they will be able to understand and put int o practice the definitions and principles taught in the sample essay. The reason that instructors use these essays is to teach students that the diverse individuals that have been incorporated into various ethnic groups are the same people. This means that they all suffer from the same problems as everyone else. Racism has been taken out of it's true meaning and replaced with the claim that these differences mean the same thing. Students will be encouraged to look at each race as a whole, rather than seeing them individually.Medical students are taught in their social policies and ethics class to think on their feet. If you really think about it, if there were no races, then we would be able to meet all of our energy needs with renewable sources. This would be a great help to our planet and would lower our energy costs substantially. No one wants to be labeled a racist, but since we live in a society where political correctness has become the norm, everyone is faced with these words e very day. The difference between a person who is racist and one who is not, is that the latter individual has learned to filter what he says and how he says it. To be a racist means that the individual finds it easier to call someone the n-word than it does to truly think about why this is happening. A racist believes that the differences between races should be viewed as nothing more than mere difference in color.Students are usually not given any indication that it is alright to use these examples in their educational environment, so they are left wondering if they are guilty of racism, or are they a victim of it. The two examples I have given here are commonly used and understood by students, so students know what to expect when it comes to racial adversities. It is quite easy to find these types of racial adversity essay samples in many medical schools across the country. These examples are offered in order to teach students to think about their surroundings and society as a whol e.

The topic under discussion within this paper is that of learning styles and how each individual has a dominant way of learning. There are many types of ,learning styles which are being discussed throughtout the paper and the succussfulness of these theories. There is also a reflective account to the learning styles presentation and how effective this was within a group, presented through kolbs learning style cycle. Section one Learning styles is a way of identifying the learner’s preference in how they work such as visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. There are many ways in which learning styles has been presented and developed into showing how each individual processes information to learn. David Kolb describes himself as a ‘contemporary advocate of Experiential Learning’. His work in fact can be traced back to that famous dictum of Confucius around 450 BC: ‘Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.’ Kolb’s twelve-item Learning Style Inventory yields four types of learners: divergers, assimilators, convergers and accommodators. His approach focuses primarily on adult learners. In Kolb’s model the concept of experiential learning explores learning from experience through reflection and conceptualising to action and on to further experience. Sociology and Social Science Indigenous People in Australia

Question: Discuss about theSociology and Social Sciencefor Indigenous People in Australia. Answer: Introduction This essay contains the poverty of indigenous people in Australia which is based on the socio-economic culture of Australia along with this the essay also discloses the employment discrimination in Australia which is based on income inequality system in Australia. The working system is not so developed in Australia and according to the people of Australia poverty is the main reason for this difference. Though housing and training opportunities are mostly available in some region, yet because of poverty and unemployment system people cannot afford these opportunities as the prices and rental status are so high of such opportunities (Mendes 2015). In some region of Australia, shortage of work is also available which causes distribution inequality in the country. Unemployment is one of the biggest problems in the country because some people are indigenous by their financial position. According to Cooper 2014, some indigenous people are not meeting their daily requirement because of the poverty line in Australia (Callander and Schofield 2012). Literature Review According to Australian Council of Social Service (ACSS) in 2012, the poverty line in Australia increases every year, and the government tries to solve this issue. This issue is also the political issue of the country because poverty takes place because of the politic system also. In the year 2010, having taken the description of costs of housing, around 2,265,000 people or 12.5% of all citizens in Australia are living in a household below the poverty line which includes 5,75,000 children (around 17.3% of all children in Australia) (Doyle and Mendes 2015). According to todays era of 21st century, because of poverty, most of the people in Australia are homeless and living in a household. This issue affects the society of some urban region in Australia. Children are not getting proper education because of poverty and unemployment problem of their family. It is critically found that because of poverty of indigenous people in Australia, they are not meeting their daily needs and their children are also not getting admission in top universities for more study. In today's world poverty is a certain problem which is affecting the people most and causes the country development (Bolle 2016). In some region of Australia, people of the community participate in some social and economic events and programs to make some money for their daily needs. People access some community services which are affordable for them to take part in the social event. This issue caused very much as the poverty line in Australia (Callander and Schofield 2012). Poverty and Welfare Issues in Australia In today's world Australia is facing the problem of poverty to a great segment, and because of this issue, people are very unsafe in Australia. Poverty is also an inequality problem, and it is not caused only by individual position. There are various causes of this poverty issue in Australia which are mentioned bellow; Social Mobility: There are scores of people who are not employed and living without doing any work. These people cannot meet their day-to-day requirement because they are in need of money and employment. In some region of Australia, shortage of work is also available which caused distribution inequality in the country (Edwards 2016). Education: Education system in Australia is lower which has the link with unemployment. Standard of living is not so developed because of the low education system in Australia. It causes the poverty line which indicates the unemployment problem as well as inequality system in Australia. Some children studied in high school and after that they cannot get admission in top University because of poverty and unemployment in Australia (Western and Haynes 2014). Housing System: In some major cities of Australia, Only minority people having low income can own their house without any taking loan and mortgage. As well as in some cities housing rent is not affordable by people. Though housing and training opportunities are mostly available in some region, yet because of poverty and unemployment, people cannot afford these opportunities because the prices and rental status are so high of such opportunities. Since last two decades, prices of housing are increasing randomly, but the income of people raises reasonably over the country. This housing issue causes poverty system more in Australia (Sharam and Hulse 2014). Labor market discrimination: Unemployment is the major problem in Australia. Most of the people are unemployed which leads to the causes of poverty in Australia. People are out of work, and they are in need of work, but according to the employment system of Australia, they are not getting employment. Some children are also doing child labor to support their family because of poverty system in Australia. Gender Inequality in Australia There is a difference of gender pay gap between men and women's average earning in a week which shows that men are making more in comparison to women in Australia. Though earning capacity of the people is taking place, the poverty line is not decreasing because of major unemployment system in Australia. According to the Average Bureau of statics,' national earning of gender pay gap is currently running around 16.2% as well as from the past two decades having hovered between 15% and 19% of the earnings in Australia. In some region of Australia standard of living of people are not so developed because of poverty and unemployment system. It has considered that men earn more than women (Lamontagne 2013). Racial or Ethnic Inequality Some factors influence the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous which affects the poverty line Australia. These factors are mentioned bellow; Men and women are not working in the same industry similarly income is different for both of them. Men are working at high integrity, and their job attracted at higher wages and dominated industry. Whereas, women are working at a lower dominated the industry and drew lower wage rate (Phillips and Luke 2016). There is a lack of senior position and also the part time and role as a flexible high position of women. Whereas, men work as the full time to make more income, and there is also the availability of the flexible senior position in Australia (Bodkin-Andrews 2014). There is a difference of education, work experience and seniority between men and women in Australia (Craven and Yeung 2014). There is a direct discrimination of income between indigenous and non-indigenous people in Australia (Arens 2014). There is a right argument of the poverty line and unemployment between indigenous and non-indigenous people in Australia. To reduce this issue from the region, Australia needs to develop some employment system for the better standard of living of people According to ACSS; some people are indigenous in nature because they are not meeting their daily requirement and facing the issue of poverty and unemployment in Australia. All the above factors indicate the gender gap between men and women's effort in Australia, and because of poverty, women are also working to meet their daily needs (Phillips and Luke 2016). Measurement and Reduction of the Issue in Australia There are various methods to measure the issue of the poverty line and unemployment system in Australia. These issues can be reduced from the country if Australian Council of Social Service (ACSS) recommends some measurement to reduce the problem of poverty. ACSS has taken some fundamental analysis to mitigate these issues which are as follows; A National Anti-Poverty Plan (NAPP) is going to hold by the ACSS to reduce the problem of poverty and unemployment It increases the employment sector and also increases the lower social security payment rates for unemployed people, children, and lone parents in Australia Maintaining an efficient minimum wage rate to reduce poverty among the household. Trying to give more employment to the needy people and also reduces the cost of some daily elements. Children are also getting some education facility at rare little cost to reduce the issue of poverty and unemployment in Australia Figure 1: Unemployment structure in Australia Source: (www.tradingeconomics.com.au) Findings According to the era of 21st Century, poverty and unemployment issues increase every year in Australia. Most of the indigenous people are facing the problem of poverty because they cannot meet their daily requirements accordingly. From the above analysis, it has been considered that the number of unemployment increases every year, and ACSS is trying to reduce the problem of poverty and unemployment in Australia. The education system in Australia is lower which has the link with unemployment. Standard of living of people is not so developed because of the low school system in Australia. ACSS is trying to develop the country and providing some less cost education to some indigenous children (Johnson and Robinson 2014). According to the Average Bureau of Statics,' national gender pay gap earning is currently running around 16.2% as well as from the past two eras having hovered between 15% and 19% of the earnings in Australia. Earning capacity of the people is not so developed in Australia, and there is an earnings comparison between men and women of Australia. Some factors influence the indigenous and non-indigenous people who show the earning gap between them. Men are working at high priority, and their job concerned at higher wages and dominated the industry. Whereas, women are working at a lower dominated industry and attracted lower wage rate. Housing and education problem are the major poverty issue in Australia because most of the children are not getting study because of the high demand of money for admission. ACSS is providing some less cost study and scholarship for Indigenous students in Australia (Yates 2013). Conclusion From the above discussion of the poverty of indigenous people in Australia' and the employment discrimination in Australia,' it has been concluded that the country is facing the problem of poverty and unemployment at a large segment. Children and students are not safe because of poverty issue in Australia. Students are not getting higher study because of low wage rate and unemployment system and also not getting admission in top University because of poverty issue in Australia. Australian Council of Social Service (ACSS) is trying to contribute some less cost training and program for the indigenous student of the country. Some people are indigenous because of the poverty line in the country. Due to this issue the country is facing various criticisms. In some region of Australia, if any person is sick he cannot get hospitality and medical because of poverty and unemployment issues. People do not get their daily needed elements because of poverty. It has been considered that issues of poverty and unemployment are widely affecting the country but in coming days these issues might be solved by the help of Australian Council of Social Services (ACSS). Your topic can be something very specific, or it can be one that is broad, and general in nature. So what can you expect to include in your topic? It all depends on the type of paper that you are writing. You want to be specific in the topics that you write, so that the readers will be able to get a good idea of what the paper is about before they start reading it.For example, if you were writing a paper about a certain group of people, you would want to be specific in your topic. These companies are not required to disclose exactly how much funding they receive, but it is enough to keep the research going. As you might guess, the pharmaceutical companies do not want to lose funding that they receive, so they keep this information secret. Some other things that you might want to discuss when writing topics for stem cell research include: the amount of money that are invested into this research, the number of people involved in the research, and the amount of progress that has been made. The Things They Carried Essay Example

The Things They Carried Essay What do you NOT know about him/her? What makes your speaker an effective story teller? What character in the novel do you believe to be the least effective? Why? How does the speaker relate to this character? I know that the speaker Is conscious of what he writes about, meaning that he knows he writes only about the Vietnam War and that it has consumed his writing career yet cant help but continue to write about the stories and his buddies who died and how it felt to be a young soldier against his will. What I dont know about IM is what really happened to him after he got back home from the war; he added a story about a friends life after the war but he never went Into full detail about his own life. There is really one main thing that makes the speaker an effective story teller, and that is the way he detailed his stories so etiquette while still maintaining a down to earth tone which allows readers to connect with the author on a deeper level. Another thing that ties In with the first reason is the way OBrien makes his stories come alive in a sense that you feel like youre really there in the dead of night n Vietnam listening to Rat Skills outrageously true tales or youre watching Tim shoot that frail boy with a start shaped hole In his eye. Although there were many seemingly unimportant characters In the novel. Every single one had a meaning behind it no matter how small the role so there werent any that were the least effective (at least in my opinion). Even though the novel was written to convey his buddies perspectives on the war, It really seemed to me that all of those stories re what make Tim OBrien the man he is; as if they are all puzzle pieces to his life. Choose five quotes that you believe completely characterize the speaker. Record and explain each. You must use details from the text to support your conclusions. 1 . Now, perhaps, you can understand why Ive never told this story before UT what embarrasses me much more, and always will, is the paralysis that took my heart. A moral freeze: I couldnt decide, I couldnt act, I couldnt comport myself.. This quote shows how the speaker Is afraid of not knowing. He does not like feeling venerable or exposed so that frightened him which ultimately made him embarrassed to tell that story. He was not reluctant because within the story he had cried, as he mentions in the same quote, but bec ause he felt like he couldnt comport [himself] with even a pretense of modest dignity. 2. You can tell a true war story If it embarrasses you. If you dont care for obscenity, you dont care for the truth; If you dont care for the truth, watch how you vote. This shows how the speaker knows about true war stories. Not only that, but he knows how theyre supposed to sound, feel like, what ar story cannot be believed and if you do then you must be skeptical: often the crazy stuff is true and the normal stuff isnt, because the normal stuff is necessary to make you believe the truly incredible craziness. 3. By telling stories, you objectify your own experience. You separate it from yourself. You pin down certain truths. You make up others. You start sometimes with an incident that truly happened, and you carry it forward by inventing incidents that in fact did not occur but that nonetheless help to clarify and explain. The speaker is explaining how he tells stories, which makes up his en tire writing career. He explains how telling the truth and sprinkling in some tall tales makes for a good story so that the reader can connect with it. 4. Someday, I hope, shell ask again. But here I want to pretend shes grown-up. I want to tell her exactly what happened And then I want to say to her that as a little girl she was absolutely right. This is why I keep writing war stories. He wanted to keep his daughters innocence even though he knew she was right. He admits the reason for writing war stories, which is because he wants his daughter to know what he has done. This shows that the speaker wants to keep re innocence alive, but only until she is old enough to know the truth put into perfectly constructed words. . Im young and happy. Ill never die. Im skimming across the surface of my own history, moving fast, riding the melt beneath the blades I realize it is as Tim trying to save Tommys life with a story. I think this quote characterizes the speaker as a whole: in his mind, he is still in his dream world with Linda, ice skating and being in love. The last sentence especially reveals his true identity, which is the same young nine year old Timmy he was and st ill is as he says throughout the last chapter.

buy custom Psoriasis essay

buy custom Psoriasis essay Psoriasis is a non-contagious chronic skin disease that is characterized by inflammatory and multiplying itchy patches on the skin and is clinically identified by well established, erythematous red papules and plaques having silvery scales. These patches usually appear on the elbows, knees, external surfaces, and scalp, but may be manifested all over the body (Oguejiofo, 2010). As the condition advances, one may also develop inflamed and achy joints, experience alterations in the appearance of nails, feel fatigue, and develop redness and pain around the eyes. The disease may be influenced by particular systemic and ecological features, but the course cannot be exactly identified. Immune system malfunctions arise from genetic information, where a patient carries genes, such as the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)that is known to cause swellings, highly found in individuals with psoriatic arthritis, and claimed to be one of the instigators (Langley, 2010). The immune malfunction leads to a rapid growth cycle of skin cells, which then die, but instead of falling off accumulate to form patches or, in some cases, inflammations and damages to the joints (Oguejiofo, 2010). Psoriasis can be caused by a genetic inheritance, though the process of inheritance is unclear, but assumed to be polygenic after analysis of the historical lineage of the patients. HLA system includes genes HLA B16, Cw6, B13, and B27, which are the genetic indicators in different psoriatic populations (Bandyopadhyay, 2012). Some of the factors that may aggravate and onset psoriasis according to Bandyopadhyay (2012) include: Trauma; this involves the growth of psoriatic wounds at the injured spot, which can be a result of physical, chemical, surgical, infective injuries, or inflammations. This is also known as Koebner phenomenon. Infection; a severe development of guttate psoriasis may occasionally be activated by the infection of streptococcal pharyngitis. Equally, HIV infection is also linked to the intensification in disease. Drugs; exposure to Lithium, withdrawal from systemic corticosteroids, antimalarial drugs, NSAID, and beta-blockers may catalyze the development of the disease (Bandyopadhyay, 2012). Other potential activators of the disease include strong sunlight, psychological stress, cigarette smoking, and alcohol (commonly experienced by males). Role of Immune Response The precise immune-pathogenesis of psoriasis is not clearly known. However, its etiology is associated with immunologic factors. The disease entails development of epidermal hyperplasia, existence of acute inflammatory cells, and alterations of vascular inflammation. The skin epidermis and dermis of a psoriatic plaque usually contain high numbers of different immune system cells, such as activated T cells, activated antigen-presenting cells (APCs) (Bandyopadhyay, 2012) (which include Langerhans, dendritic cells, and macrophages), hyper-proliferating keratinocytes, and neutrophils (Bandyopadhyay, 2012). The stimulation of the dermal cells, APCs, or keratinocytes may lead to stimulation of antigen production. The secretion of cytokine, lymphokine antigens, and the enhancement of T-cell in turn activates inflammations and hyper-proliferation of epidermal cells bringing to the clinical lesions termed as psoriasis (Bandyopadhyay, 2012). Nursing Assessment Nursing assessment involves physical examination, where a nurse interviews patients about their feelings, possibility of past injury, or exposure to chemicals. A patient suffering from psoriasis may record a feeling of soreness, burning, itchiness of the skin, or painful joints (Langley, 2010). Assessment process also includes inspection, where nurse observes the affected body parts and examines the presence of thickened skin with red papules covered with silvery scales. Palpation helps nurses to identify the texture of thickened skin. Physical examination of a typical lesion of psoriasis manifests features, such as lesions showing distinct borders, which are raised above the skin surface, appear red in color, and may be bounded by a pale halo. The lesions commonly are more than one centimeter in diameter and appear round or oval shaped (Langley, 2010). These lesions sometimes merge to form wide geographic patterns and are enclosed with loosely attached silvery white scales, which, when removed, may expose bleeding points. The parts usually affected are the elbows, shins, sacral regions, nails, and knees, among others. Other than the site variations, there are usually morphological variations of the lesions referred to as verrucous, lichenoid, linear, annular, follicular, figurate, and gyrate lesions (Lui, 2012: Oguejiofo, 2010). Implications for Nursing Psoriasis affects skin appearance and, as the skin is an exposed visible organ, can cause extreme psychological responses on patient. Nurses, therefore, have a continuous duty to psychologically help patients suffering from such conditions. This is because the condition affects the persons sense of self-concept. The constituents of self-concept that are normally evaluated by nurses comprise body image and self-esteem. The implications of nursing assessment include patients psychosocial responses to these components that often result in social isolation and, subsequently, loneliness (Menter Stoff, 2011). Many individuals in such conditions are usually disturbed by the body image and appearance, fear the risk of social isolation and experience changes in the self-esteem. Nurses need to be aware of the identifying characteristics of this diagnosis and the suitable nursing interventions to be employed that can result in positive patient outcomes (Menter Stoff, 2011). Nurses are, theref ore, in a unique position to handle the multidimensional impacts of psoriasis. Some of the interventions that can be employed are: Promoting understanding of the patient through explanations that there is no cure for psoriasis, though the disease can be controlled through lifetime management and advising patients to avoid the provoking factors. Promoting skin integrity; this is done by advising patients not to scratch psoriatic areas, instead to prevent the skin from drying out and clean with not too hot water, and teaching patients to use bath oil or emollient cleansing agent meant for sore and scaling skin. Improving self-concept and body image; this involves introduction of coping strategies that helps minimize stress and training patient to embrace self-care. Treatment Long term treatment is one of the nursing implications that must be initiated after nursing assessment and diagnosis of the psoriasis condition. Psoriasis is a chronic disease and, therefore, its therapy is long-term, needs to be individualized, depending on age, occupation, sex, and severity of the disease and available resources (Menter Stoff, 2011). Treatment of scalp psoriasis is still a challenge to the dermatologists. An effective management mechanism is essential and should include examination of the severity of the condition. The objectives of management are to slow the possible quick turnover of epidermis and to encourage solutions of the psoriatic lesions by addressing the aggravating factors, assessing the patients condition with a view of minimizing stress, gentle removal of scales using oils that soften the scales (Lui, 2012). There are three main types of therapy used in handling psoriasis. These include: topical, phototherapy, and systemic agents that can be used inde pendently or concurrently (Bandyopadhyay, 2012). Topical Therapy this is an outpatient therapy used as the basic methodology in the treating mild plaque psoriasis. This involves administration of medicines in cream or ointment forms applied to the affected skin and scalp areas. Phototherapy - used when there is extensive and widespread resistance to topical treatment. This type of therapy requires special facilities that can offer two main forms of phototherapy. The first one is ultraviolet B (UVB) that uses ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths 290-320 nm, and the second is photo chemotherapy (PUVA), which includes a photosensitizing drug methoxsalen administered orally to patients, then ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation to treat individuals with widespread disease (Bandyopadhyay, 2012). Systemic Therapy; this is employed when both, phototherapy and topical forms of treatments prove to be ineffective, and is administered on patients suffering from erythrodermic psoriasis, active psoriatic arthritis, and widespread pustular psoriasis. The major implication that comes with the diagnosis and the treatment of psoriasis is the high cost of this therapy that many patients may not afford. Some of the drugs used in the therapy may include antimetabolites, such as methotrexate, acitretin, cyclosporine, which is used to selectively inhibit the T-helper cell from producing IL-2, thus produces immunosuppressive effects. Others include sulphasalazine and mycophenolate mofetil, which is still under evaluation, intended to prevent synthesis of the nucleotide guanosine (Bandyopadhyay, 2012). Conclusion Psoriasis is a non-contagious chronic skin disease that is manifested by inflammatory itchy patches on the skin and is clinically identified by well established, reddish papules and plaques enclosed with silvery scales that are generally circular or oval shaped. These patches usually appear on the elbows, knees, and on the exterior surfaces and scalp, but may be manifested all over the body. This condition is caused by malfunctions of the immune system and exposure to environmental factors (Langley, 2010). Nursing assessment of the disease is through clinical observation and physical examination for the identifying characteristics of this diagnosis that include feelings related to soreness, burning, itchiness of the skin, or painful joints and presence of lesions that show distinct border, are raised above the skin surface, and appear red in color. There are a lot of nursing implications that range from self-esteem and feeling of isolation to the cost of therapy administration (Mente r Stoff, 2011). The nurses also have a responsibility to advice the patients on the best self-practices alongside administration of therapies, such as topical, phototherapy, and systemic agents to maintain the disease.
